Let us first consider the two types of weight loss surgery. Also called bariatric surgery, one procedure is called the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which can either involve closing off portions of the stomach while bypassing the small intestine or actually removing portions of the stomach to limit the food-storage capability. The other procedure is called gastric banding, which involves placing a band around the stomach to restrict it and thus limit the amount of food material that a person can take, and would want to take in.
Weight loss surgery however, is only recommended for individuals who have a body mass index of about 40 or higher, which means that it could be a male who is over 100 pounds the normal weight or a female who is over 80 pounds than normal. Patients who have other health problems such as diabetes and/or high blood pressure or conditions such as sleep apnea or heart diseases may also qualify for weight loss surgery if their conditions are preventing them from losing weight and are instead being exposed to more health risk without the surgery. Conventional methods of weight loss such as increased physical activity or lifestyle and dietary changes are recommended for obese individuals, but those who remain overly obese even after trying these methods make look at weight loss surgery as a treatment option.
However, anyone who decides to undergo this type of surgery must be well informed about the risks and the lifetime adjustments that must be carried out after surgery. A candidate for surgery may also be required to undergo psychological evaluation to make sure that the person is not only physically, but also mentally ready to face the complications and lifestyle changes that await after the procedure. Those who have other persistent health concerns, however, for example, a serious illness, an eating disorder, a history of alcohol and substance abuse, and those with gastric health problems, may not qualify for the procedure.
Weight loss surgery is an important medical advancement that can help morbidly obese people to manage their weight problems. However, this procedure must never be taken lightly and serious consideration must be given before undergoing such an extreme procedure.
